THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF EATING REAL FOOD

The main difference between real food, otherwise known as whole food, and the alternative is that the alternative lacks critical vitamins and minerals. The majority of grocery store foods can be considered unnatural because they are heavily processed. When food is made in a factory, the composition of the real food ingredients is altered. Nutrients are removed and replaced with artificial ingredients and high doses of sugar, salt, fat, and chemical preservatives. This is a problem because our bodies require a wide range of nutrients for proper health.

Real Food

Natural Meats
For many of us, meat is a staple for dinner and lunch meals. We’re lovers of chicken, steak, pork chops, lamb chops, and more. Natural meat is minimally processed, and so it does not contain additives. The animals are raised without antibiotics, growth hormones, and/or steroids. At Butcher’s Best, our prepared foods are all made with high-quality, minimally processed, natural, and local meats from our butcher shop.

Whole Grains and Fiber
Fiber is found primarily in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains like oats, wheat, and brown rice. Fiber helps keep your digestive track clean and healthy, and reduces the incidence of heart disease. High-fiber diets can also contribute to lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Whole grains are also excellent sources of other essential nutrients such as iron, magnesium, niacin, and protein.

One of the easiest ways to ensure that you’re getting enough fruits, vegetables, and whole grains in your diet is to have someone cook these foods for you and make them delicious. This is what we do at Butcher’s Best. We make eating your vegetables easy. Our deli’s hot prepared food options typically include vegetable sides that are always made with real ingredients and prepared from scratch in our very own kitchen. Some of the veggies that we’ve served include roasted squash; wild rice with onions, mushrooms, and garlic; and quinoa with butter and scallions. We make eating healthy easy. And by the way, this is how our grandparents used to eat. At Butcher’s Best, we’re trying to get back to the basics of home cooking.

Sustainable Agriculture
Grocery store foods are being made in large factories with ingredients produced by massive corporate farms. The growing techniques used by these facilities are damaging the environment and creating health issues for humans. In addition, the warehouses use large amounts of energy and create packaging waste, which are big issues for the environment.

Corporate farms use harmful, unnatural pesticides and fertilizers that seep into our soil and foods. These chemicals contaminate not only what we eat but also the ground water. Large-production farms are driven by making as much money as they can. This is their singular focus.

Local farms, like Shortt’s Family Farm in Sandy Hook, CT, and Rowland Farm in Oxford, CT, are doing things much differently. Shortt’s uses farming techniques that yield natural, organic produce that is actually good for you. Rowland Farm not only raises its animals without hormones or antibiotics, but also it raises its animals in a natural environment and sells directly to stores like Butcher’s Best.

This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to real foods and their health benefits. The damage that industrial food is doing to our bodies and environment is staggering. It’s nice to know, however, that alternatives do exist.
