YOUR LOCAL DELI DOESN’T HAVE TO BE UNHEALTHY

There are a lot of reputable delis in the Newtown, CT area, and across Fairfield and Litchfield Counties. The problem, however, is that most of the lunch meats sold at standard delis and grocery stores are full of unnatural, processed ingredients. Deli sandwich meats are among the unhealthiest foods that we eat for this reason.

Deli

Deli meats like ham, turkey, roast beef, salami, and bologna are heavily processed in factories. The products start out as real meats but then get worked through the factory, where massive amounts of salt are added as well as chemical preservatives, nitrates, fillers, dyes, and artificial colors and flavors. The end result is a Frankenstein of unhealthy sandwich meat.

It’s actually not difficult to provide natural meats for deli sandwiches. The cost is typically a little higher, but the health benefits and taste are well worth it. At Butcher’s Best, our philosophy of serving only the highest-quality, all-natural ingredients is applied to all foods we sell, including our deli meats. Instead of serving processed cold cuts, we roast our own all-natural, whole roast beef, turkey, and ham in-house. The product starts as beautiful cuts of roast beef, ham, and turkey from animals that are raised without any antibiotics, hormones, or steroids.

One of the main ingredients that makes processed lunch meat so compelling is salt. Salt causes our bodies to crave more. This is why most packaged foods these days contain high levels of sodium. The salt and sugar in packaged foods are also there to cover up the taste of chemical preservatives. Deli meats have become so laden with unnatural ingredients that we’ve become accustomed to the flavors. When you taste a slice of real, natural roast beef or turkey, however, you’ll notice the difference. And when you bite into one of our store-baked hams, you’ll notice that the texture is also more appealing. It doesn’t feel like rubber.

In addition to lunch meats, delis typically serve chicken cutlets and ground beef for meatballs. Although these types of meats are not as heavily processed, they most likely come from food factories. Factory meat comes from animals that are raised for high yield. As a result, depending on the animal, they are treated heavily with growth hormones, antibiotics, and steroids to ensure that they grow fast and don’t get sick. At Butcher’s Best, we don’t like this. Our deli and the entire store are dedicated to providing only real, natural meats and ingredients.

As consumers more clearly understand what goes into foods from large-scale manufacturers, we are seeing a growing appreciation for natural, real foods. These people understand that treating their body well has a lot to do with what you put into it. And they want to watch their grandkids grow up. Seeking out more natural sandwiches and deli foods is a good start.
